The Signal House

The sun rises in one window and sets in another.

The harbourmaster needed to see everything, so the tower sees everything: every floor takes windows on all four sides, and the lantern at the top is barely a room at all — it is a glass instrument you happen to be allowed to work in. Sunrise lands on the east desk, sunset on the west one, and the city does the rest.

These are the smallest floors we hold and the most asked-after: one desk, one practice, one person who has decided that the view is the office. The survey cannot make the lantern larger. It can only prove that from five in the morning to nine at night, the sun is somewhere on its glass.
